Elegant, stately Turin may not be everyone's Italian bucket list, but with a beautiful vacation home in Turin, you'll soon be able to discover all that this northern Italian city has to offer. Turin's attractions may not be as obvious as those of Rome or Venice, but we can assure you: just a bit of time spent in a house in this lovely northern city will have you discovering all manner of draws.
Turin was the first capital of modern Italy; it was also home to the royal family for years. Both should give you a clue as to why apartments in Turin are an excellent idea of your next holiday: Turin is a beautiful city boasting elegant architecture, but the city is also home to a good deal of natural resources including the beautiful Po River, flowing through the city center, the hills overlooking the city as well as the gorgeous Italian Alps. Try to pick accommodations with a view to take full advantage! But natural resources are far from all that Turin has to offer. Beautiful villas are scattered throughout the city; Turin is even known by some as the European capital of the Baroque style. Just outside the city, you can visit La Venaria Reale, the 17th century ducal palace.
Turin may not be the first place you think of when you consider technology, but don't jump to conclusions. While Turin is not at the forefront of programming or development, it is an important location for the automobile industry: FIAT is based here, as is the Museo dell'Automobile or car museum, home to over 170 vehicles dating as far back as the 18th century, so car fans are sure to find something they'd like to see. Turin is also home to a lovely Cinema Museum in a gorgeous building that covers 3,200 square meters and offers both print and film installations on the 7th art. But modernity is far from all Turin has to offer. It's also home to one of the most important religious discoveries for the Catholic Church, the aptly named Shroud of Turin, which can be found in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. The shroud itself is only displayed once every few years. Do some research on the sights you plan to visit to ensure that your room for rent isn't too far. Alternatively, you may wish to stay in a more residential neighborhood for a cheap apartment – no worries: Turin is easy to navigate, and you'll never be very far from all you want to see.
Northern Italy is far less about pasta than it is about polenta and rice, so be sure to take a taste of some local specialties during your stay, and leave the pizza and pasta to cities further south. If you rent an apartment in Turin, you can take advantage of the local markets in Turin, like the Porta Palazzo market, one of the biggest, cheapest and most diverse in the country. You'll find lots of ingredients here but also clothes, souvenirs and more. You'll also want to be sure to find a café within walking distance of your vacation rental in Turin; in Italy, breakfast – which consists of coffee and a cornetto or Italian croissant -- is a social affair. Become a regular at a café, like one of the historic ones located around Piazza Castello, and you'll find that your home in Turin extends far beyond your apartment in Turin. The same holds true for the bar where you have your evening aperitivo, an important part of Italian culture. This pre-dinner drink is usually accompanied by access to a food buffet, similar to Spanish tapas, and is a great way to end a long day of visiting the city.
