Pisa is most famous for its leaning tower, but this small city offers much more to discover during your holiday. Perhaps the best way to discover the Tuscan city is from your very own vacation home in Pisa.
When choosing a neighborhood for your vacation rental in Pisa, it may seem that you have only one option: staying around the Leaning Tower. While it's definitely a sight to see, and one of the most famous architectural projects gone wrong of all time, it's not the only place to pick accommodations in Pisa. You can locate vacation rentals throughout the center of town, which is home to a vibrant student scene and has been home to the local university since the 1400s. This means that your apartment rental could be right above a beautiful café where you'll soon become a regular, or within walking distance of the hopping bar scene so there's no need to worry about getting home after a night on the town. During the day, you'll love being in the center so that you can explore the Romanesque buildings, Gothic churches and Renaissance piazzas that make up the heart of Pisa.
Pisa's famed leaning tower was first conceived of as a bell tower for the cathedral, built starting in 1173. The tower started tilting due to problems with the ground below, and for years, while tourists loved its unique look, locals sought a solution. A project in 2001 led to the tower once again being climbable, so do be sure to pay it a visit, but once you're done, be sure to pay a visit to the rest Piazza dei Miracoli, or the piazza of miracles. While the piazza is home to the famous tower, it's also home to the cathedral and baptistery, each of which exhibits beautiful examples of Romanesque architecture. Not far from the square, you'll find the Opera del Duomo museum, which is well worth a visit and displays, amongst other things, beautiful bronze griffins from Syria that were brought here by the Crusaders.
Be sure to take a stroll down the Arno River as well; visit during the summertime festival Gioco del Ponte, which is a reenactment of a medieval contest between those who lived north and south of the river. The festival starts with a parade complete with medieval costume and ends with teams attempting to push a huge cart into the opposite team's area. With any luck, you'll be able to get a vacation rental in Pisa with water views so you can take in the whole spectacle!
As in many cities, it's a good idea to keep away from the touristic center when looking for tasty, authentic, inexpensive food in Pisa. The center of the city – far from the leaning tower – is a good place for restaurants, but if you have an apartment rental in Pisa with a kitchen, try some of the local markets, like that on Piazza delle Vettovaglie, which is opened daily from 7am to 1pm, and prepare some Tuscan recipes of your own!
